NAIROBI, Kenya, Jun 12 – Detectives from Kenya have termed their recent operation targeting organised criminal organisations under the banner ‘Usalama’ as successful saying they have been able to dismantle the operations, recover fire arms and counterfeit goods worth millions of shillings.

Deputy Director Directorate of Criminal Investigations Gideon Kimilu on Friday told journalists that during the June 4 and 5 operation, 28 sachets of heroin were recovered in Mombasa, bhang in various parts of the country and over 121,000 litres of illicit brew destroyed.

“In Nairobi County police recovered two pistols and a homemade one in Buruburu…all the suspects were shot dead,” he said.

Twenty six countries in Africa who are members of the Eastern Africa Police Chiefs Cooperation Organization and Southern Africa Regional Police Chiefs Cooperation carried a similar operation within their jurisdictions.

Kimilu said this will go ahead in enhancing the security situation in the country after the operation that focused on combating and destroying criminal networks within the country and the two regions.

“The objective of the operation was to gather operational intelligence on known human traffickers, drug traffickers, motor vehicle theft syndicates, wildlife perpetrators, smugglers of minerals, syndicate involved in the theft of copper cables and illicit small arms and light weapons proliferators,” he said.

They also focused on identifying their possible locations, “their modus operandi within the targeted countries.”

Governments within the continent have merged in countering major security challenges especially terrorism and radicalization of youths.

In Kenya, the Government has proposed to allocate Sh223.9 billion to the security sector during the 2015-2016 financial years, a Sh27 billion increase from the previous allocation.
