NAIROBI, Kenya, June 14 – More than ten Al-Shabaab militants were killed on Sunday morning following an attempted terror attack on a military camp at Baure area, Lamu County.

Military spokesperson Colonel David Obonyo said two soldiers were killed but the army recovered 13 AK 47 guns, eight grenades and five rocket propelled grenades.

The attack comes hours after Inspector General of Police Joseph Boinnet issued a terror alert on the Al-Qaeda linked Al-Shabaab militia ahead of the holy month of Ramadhan.

“Some of their wicked plans include targeting key government installations, security personnel, journalists who report negatively about them and other Kenyans in order to sow discord amongst the citizens,” he pointed out.

The IG called on the public to provide any security information to police in a bid to ensure the country remains safe.

“Some of the evil designs the Al- Shabaab is using include; sowing discord among peace-loving Kenyans especially in the North Eastern region in furtherance of its evil agenda of alienating the region and seeking to interrupt government development programs in the region by giving false promises to the residents that by driving out non-Muslims, the region will prosper,” he lamented.

It’s not yet confirmed whether all the attackers were killed but the National Police Service spokesperson George Kinoti has told Capital News that there will be a briefing on the same.

Lamu County, has previously had a series of attacks targeted on non-Muslims in what the police boss said is a mission to divide Kenyans along religious lines.

More than 100 people were killed last year in a series of attacks in Mpeketoni area, within the County by the militants.

Police presence has been increased in various parts of the country specifically Nairobi, North Eastern and the coastal region.

“We shall work with everyone to ensure negative elements in our midst are exposed to face the law,” he stated.

He said already arrests have been made as police continue to carry out high level investigations which include in refugee camps to avert any terror attack.

The militants have consistently launched terror attacks in the country with the recent on being on April 2 at the Garissa University College, where 148 people were killed among them 142 being students.

Al-Shabaab has attributed their attacks to continued presence of KDF now under AMISOM in Somalia where they have largely destabilized the operation.

They worst moment was when the Kenya Defence Forces managed to capture Kismayu port town, the operating ground.
