Pilot killed in Limuru air crash

LIMURU-CRASHNAIROBI, Kenya May 31- A pilot was killed when a light aircraft crashed into a key transmission site in Limuru on Sunday, police and witnesses said.

He was flying the aircraft to the Wilson airport from Naivasha when it went down at about 4.10 pm, crashing on a transmitter before it partly destroyed a house nearby.

“He was the only one in it,” a senior police officer based in Nairobi who was briefed of the accident told Capital FM, but he did not immediately reveal the deceased’s identity. A woman and her child who were in the house were slightly and rushed to hospital.

The accident caused a major destruction on radio and Television transmitters based in Rironi, affecting several stations’ signals for hours, including those owned by Radio Africa Limited. Capital FM was not among those affected.

The deceased pilot is reported to have contacted the Wilson airport earlier before the plane went down, according to police.

“The cause of the accident is not known yet but we suspect it has something to do with poor visibility,” the officer said, “an investigation will be conducted to establish what may have gone wrong.”

Radio Africa Limited Chief Executive Officer Patrick Quarcoo confirmed that his stations – KISS 100, Classic 105, Radio Jambo, East FM and KISS TV– were off air after the air crash.

“TV and radio antennas, microwave links and feeder cables have been affected by the crash,” he said in a statement, “however, our technical team is on site assessing the damage and working on a backup plan to ensure that we will be back on-air in the affected areas by tomorrow (Monday) morning.”
