The police boss confirmed that five police vehicles were burnt during the attack that comes a few days after another raid was thwarted in the same area.
NAIROBI, Kenya, May 26 – Inspector General of Police Joseph Boinnet says two police officers were critically injured during Monday’s ambush by Al-Shabaab militia in Yumbis village, Garissa County while three others sustained injuries.
In a statement sent to newsrooms on Tuesday, the police boss confirmed that five police vehicles were burnt during the attack that comes a few days after another raid was thwarted in the same area.
He said a combined security operation by police officers and the Kenya Defence Forces was mounted in a bid to contain the situation.
“(An) operation to subdue the attackers is on course and as we establish more information, we shall inform the public accordingly,” he assured.
Boinnet further warned people from spreading alarming information.
“I am urging the public to desist from posting any information on the social media without verifying the same to avoid creating unnecessary panic and apprehension amongst the people,” he cautioned.
Garissa County has remained volatile with numerous attacks since April 2 when the Al Qaeda-linked militants stormed Garissa University College, killing 142 students and 6 security forces during a day-long siege.
President Uhuru Kenyatta has vowed a major offensive on the militants whose command in Somalia insists on having Kenya withdraw their troops from their soil.
