Speaking ahead of the commemoration of the organisation’s 50 year anniversary to take place on Friday, Secretary General Abbas Gullet indicated that this will ensure that response to disasters is quick.
Speaking to Capital FM News, he stressed the society’s commitment to keep up with its agenda of delivering quality services to both the government and the public.
“We want to by the end of the campaign to raise about Sh500 million which will be part of our disaster preparedness kitty such that when there are disasters, Kenya Red Cross will always be on the front line so we want to be empowered to have these resources to respond,” he stated.
President Uhuru Kenyatta is expected to officiate at the main event Friday the Kenyatta International Convention Centre (KICC).
“There will be a series of other events and tomorrow, there will be events in all other counties and we understand that the governors of the counties will be our chief guests because they are also patrons of our county branches then from there on, every month we will have an activity as a highlighter that will go on up to December,” he said.
On December 21 we will have a big do to then finalise on this campaign. There will be road shows, blood drives, first aid training, membership drives, various entertainments that we will have throughout the year like competitions with Universities in terms of the Law students and Red Cross clubs on issues to do with humanitarian laws and many other things. The big thing for us though is the training.”
The Secretary General further stated that the organization has achieved a lot for the last 50 years in terms of disaster management.
Speaking during a function with Coca Cola East Africa, Gullet pointed out that the Society’s hands on approach has distinguished it as a humanitarian organization which saves lives.
He said the KRCS has been key in dealing with emergencies and emphasized the need for support from all sectors especially the government to enable it undertake its duties effectively.
“We have distinguished ourselves as a humanitarian organisation but more needs to be done to ensure that we are prepared should there be a disaster. This calls for concerted effort on all involved because lives are at stake,” he said.
He stressed the society’s commitment to keep up with its agenda of delivering quality services to both the government and the public.
“We will look at the next fifty years and we need to prepare the foundation for those who will come after us to make this the preferred partner of choice of a humanitarian organization to both the public and government,” he said.
The Company’s General Manager Peter Njonjo shared a Coke with Gullet and expressed the company’s commitment in supporting KRCS initiatives on disaster management.
“This is a great day for us and we will support Kenya Red Cross in all its endeavours. We will share a coke now but on Friday during the main event, we will make a toast together with the Patron President Uhuru Kenyatta,” he stated.
