African Youth Movement, an independent non-governmental organisation, has now launched a campaign aimed at highlighting positive attributes within the continent using culture and photography.
Rose Wacuka member of the Advisory Network of the movement says the campaign dubbed #AfricaSmile will see Kenyans and Africans from across the globe send pictures to the movement wearing attires to represent their rich culture and a caption of why they appreciate and love Africa.
“The harsh tag AfricaSmile is meant to broadcast positivity in the mediums of smiles and cultures. The form of this campaign is for people to send in images of themselves smiling, wearing their African outfits from different parts of the continent and indicating their reasons for being happy about the continent,” Wacuka explained.
So far Africa Youth Movement has received over 50 pictures of people wearing different cultural attires and their #AfricaSmile caption, which will be published on tomorrow during the celebrations.
“Once we receive your image, your name, which country you’re from and your quote, we put that on a standard template within six hours of receiving your image and then we put it on our facebook page. We are going to move that to African Youth Movement webpage on the Africa Day,” she said adding that the campaign will go on even after the celebration.
Wacuka called on the young people to take leverage on the growing technology in coming up with various initiatives that will see the African story told in a more positive way.
“In terms of how the African story is told is that Africans themselves are excluded from that story. It’s either the story being told through the lenses of one person, one country or one occurrence. This has really been the manufactured consent that has run over the years, and digital revolution has really helped,” she noted.
Africa Day is observed as a public holiday in only five African countries, that is, Ghana, Mali, Namibia, Zambia and Zimbabwe.
