Nairobi, Kenya, Apr 14 – President Uhuru Kenyatta has assured Kenyans that the country will overcome all current challenges facing it including terrorism and corruption.
Speaking during the 21st PCEA General Assembly in Nairobi, President Kenyatta said his government will not relent in its fight against the two vices.
“The challenges of terrorism and corruption must be fought for only if we are to succeed and have a secured future for our children’s children,” said the President.
The new PCEA Moderator Julius Mwamba thanked the President for the fight against corruption saying graft is a cancer at the heart of the national fabric.
Citing insecurity as a national problem, the new PCEA moderator said the war against Al-Shabaab in Somalia must continue.
“Mr President, terror can never be defeated through cowardice but by boldly facing and distinguishing the enemy,” he said.
President Kenyatta said success wouldn’t be achieved through efforts of government alone, but through all Kenyans and called on all citizens to partner with the government against these social evils.
“If we are to end terrorism, we must agree to come together as a nation that has preached and practised religious tolerance to defeat those who preach intolerance” the President pointed out.
He said he will work with the church and all Kenyans in rooting out corruption and terrorism. With this, he said, Kenya will prosper and become a middle income nation.
“If we overcome, the future of this nation is not only guaranteed but secured,” he added.
The President congratulated the new PCEA Moderator Mwamba, the new Secretary General Reverend Peter Kania Kariuki and the new Honorary Treasurer Amon Nderi Ng’ang’a for being entrusted with the leadership of the church.
He pledged his support for the new officials saying the PCEA church has been at the forefront of religious nourishment, education and health provision.
He cited personal influence of the church on him and his family saying, “this church educated my father and opened new horizons through which he was able to achieve a lot.”
The President congratulated the PCEA church for holding peaceful elections for its leadership adding that this was a good lesson for other churches to emulate.
The PCEA General Assembly is normally held after every three years where new leaders are elected.
