NAIROBI, Kenya, Apr 14 – The Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT) on Tuesday called for the sacking of Education, Science and Technology Cabinet Secretary Jacob Kaimenyi.

In a strongly worded statement, KNUT Secretary General Wilson Sossion asked President Uhuru Kenyatta to relieve Kaimenyi of his duties claiming that he had failed to lead the sector professionally.

“It is in the interest of the public and the education sector that the appointing authority immediately relives Prof Jacob Kaimenyi (of his duties). We are no longer interested in dealing with him. We have lost every little faith that existed. We are thus asking that Prof Kaimenyi should immediately be sacked,” Sossion urged.

He complained that Kaimenyi had failed to work together with stakeholders in the field and even sidelined their views on important decision in the education sector.

Of concern to KNUT are the decisions allegedly solely made by Kaimenyi on basic education regulations and school fees guidelines.

Sossion complained that Kaimenyi ignored stakeholders’ advice and went ahead to gazette the regulations and guidelines.

“The school fees guidelines were also gazetted last month without full concurrence with the key stakeholders and in total disregard of the presentations made and the reality of the needs in the management of the schools,” Sossion charged.

According to him, Kaimenyi’s leadership is not adding value to the sector but causing more confusion and rift which is derailing development in education.

“As a major stakeholder in the education sector, we have been perturbed by the anarchy, high handedness and unprofessionalism in the decisions made by the cabinet secretary,” he complained.

However, Kaimenyi said he would not revoke the gazette notice of the school fees guidelines and also the basic education regulations.
