Police Spokesperson Gatiria Mboroki told Capital FM News that police and the military have been mobilised to the university where they are engaging the attackers in gunfight.
“Yes it is true there is an attack at the university and more police officers and the military have been sent there,” Mboroki said, “there is little we can say for now because the operation is ongoing.”
Emergency services from the Kenya Red Cross and other organisations have also been sent there to help in the rescue services, following reports of mass casualty as security forces battled it out with the attackers.
Police have not confirmed the exact number of people dead or injured in the attack, but there are reports that some of the students and staff are calling saying they are under siege.
“We cannot talk of casualties at this stage because we are still putting the information together,” she said on telephone. “Everything is being done to ensure that the situation is put in control.”
Some have told of having seen bodies but the number has not been established, according to police.
The Northern part of the country, adjacent to the Somalia border has faced numerous attacks from the militants linked to the Al Qaeda terror network since the deployment of the Kenyan military in their lawless country.
