Aluoch who joined the ICC as a judge in 2009 was elected alongside Silvia Fernandez de Gurmendi of Argentina (President) and Japan’s Kuniko Ozaki who is the Second Vice President.
The three judges will serve in the positions for the next three years.
“It is a great honour to have been elected President of the International Criminal Court. I will do my utmost to live up to the trust that my fellow judges have placed in me. I look forward to working together with the two Vice-Presidents, Judge Joyce Aluoch and Judge Kuniko Ozaki, and indeed all the judges and other organs of the court, as well the Assembly of States Parties, civil society and the international community at large, in fulfilling the ICC’s important mandate for the sake of justice, peace and the rule of law,” Gurmendi said after his election.
Ozaki is among the three judges who handled the case against President Uhuru Kenyatta in Trial Chamber V (b).
The ICC Presidency where Aluoch and the other two judges will serve is mandated with the overall leadership of the entire court.
It coordinates all the organs of the ICC including the administration of the court with an exception of the Office of the Prosecutor which operates independently.
Aluoch became the first Kenyan judge to work for the ICC since its inception.
Apart from her role as a judge, she is a strong advocate for women’s rights and has always kept the bar high in the progression of her career in law to inspire women.
During a past interview with Capital FM News, Aluoch while praising Kenyan women said she had worked hard to place herself high in her career.
