Improvement recorded in 2014 KCSE results

There was however an overall decline in Math performance for the second year running.

The decline in the number of cheating cases was however well received with 2,975 cases reported in 2014 compared to 3,812 in 2013; a 22 percent decline.

Out of the 2,975 cheating cases, 2,410 were, “collusions,” Kaimenyi said, while 179 were of candidates who carried, “unauthorised material,” in the form of cell phones into the exam room.

“This is even after they were explicitly told not to,” Kaimenyi said.

Kenya National Examination Council (KNEC) Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Joseph Kivilu also told how in January and February, fraudsters posing as officials of the examination body attempted to extort money from school heads by threatening to have their results cancelled on the premise of cheating.

“But only the guilty are afraid,” he said before Kaimenyi revealed that some head teachers were involved in the 2,975 cases of cheating.

It is worth noting that no ranking of students or schools was done during the release of the 2014 KCSE examination results following a Ministry of Education, Science and Technology (MoEST) decision taken in December of 2014.
