NAIROBI, Kenya Mar 16 – There was a high voter turnout for the Kajiado Central Parliamentary by-election on Monday as residents cast their ballots to choose a new legislator.
There were long queues in most polling centres where voting started as at 6 am.
Police said the exercise was peaceful so far, with no incident received from any of the centres across the constituency.
The hotly contested race pitting Memusi Kanchory of CORD against Patrick Tutui of the Jubilee Alliance Party (JAP) as well as little known Nkashuma Kuntai who is contesting as an independent candidate.
Memusi was expected to vote at Ilimisgiyo center, Tutui at Ilbissil township Primary school while Kuntai will also vote at Engaboli Primary school.
“We have distributed all the election materials and voting is progressing well,” Maurice Owino, the officer in charge of elections told Capital FM News on Monday morning, “We are urging voters and the candidates to strictly adhere to the rules and regulations.”
Kajiado Central constituency which fell vacant when its MP Joseph Nkaissery was appointed Cabinet Secretary at the Interior Ministry has 87 polling stations.
Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC), Chief Executive Officer Ezra Chiloba on Sunday announced that 204 security officers had been deployed to the area, alongside 300 clerks, 102 presiding officers and a similar number of deputy presiding officers.
