NAIROBI, Kenya, Mar 9 – A Member of the County Assembly (MCA) in Kiambu is yet to be found after he went missing at the weekend, despite a spirited search by family members and the police.

Juja ward MCA Samuel Gitau left his home Saturday evening but only his car was found near his gate Sunday morning, after the route to his home was barricaded by unknown people.

The father of two is said to have left his Juja home at 8pm to go and withdraw money from an Automated Teller Machine (ATM) in Juja shopping centre but this was the last time he was seen or communicated to his family.

He had left his phone charging at home according to family members, making it hard for them to track his movements.

“He could not have called anybody in case of any problem,” a police officer who cannot be named because of his rank told Capital FM News. “It would have helped us to know who he spoke to and at what time.”

His counterparts and family members say he had not previously received any threats that can be linked to his disappearance.

The Leader of Majority in the Kiambu County Assembly, Patrick Chege, told journalists on Monday that Gitau was a composed man who was not known to pick quarrels with anyone.

“He was a good man… we cannot attribute his missing to anything… not even politics,” he said.

He however says that it’s slowly becoming a norm for his counterparts to receive threats that are never acted upon despite reporting to police, leaving them in a panic mode.

“We are now getting at our homes at 5pm…you cannot even meet your people to discuss what is happening because of fear,” he said.

“Most of us have received death threats but nothing happens after reporting to police…I am one of them.”

One of the Kiambu MCA’s, Chege said, is yet to find her husband who went missing months ago. Her vehicles were set on fire by unknown people who attacked her home.

He has proposed that MCAs be issued with firearms due to the nature of their job and the increasing cases of insecurity.

“It will be hard for each one of us to have a bodyguard; but we have seen people being licensed firearm holders. This will be an economical way for the government to help improve security of our Members of County Assemblies,” he said.

“Why should we be killed and yet we are crying aloud?”

The missing MCA’s wife, Tabitha Wanjiku expressed hopes of finding his husband alive after it turned out that reports that a body had been found near a coffee plantation in Juja turned out to be false.
