NAIROBI, Kenya Mar 29 – Inspector- General of Police Joseph Boinnet has given cattle rustlers in Baragoi and Baringo 48 hours to return stolen livestock and illegal weapons or face unspecified action.

Boinnet was speaking in his office when he briefed the media of his tour of the two areas where he held meetings with security chiefs, political and community leaders on Saturday.

He said rustlers hiding in Suguta Valley have to surrender stolen animals that they have there.

“These groups and any other implicated in similar crimes have 48 hours to take heed this call, after which they will only have themselves to blame for the consequences of their defiance,” Boinnet said.

The IG put on notice bandits operating in the County saying police will not condone such acts and warned of a major operation in the area to rid of the incidents.

He said the Police Service was already working towards pacifying the volatile situation following the perennial bandit attacks.

“I don’t want to tell these criminals, that I will be going there with a club, or with arrows, or carry a certain firearm; we will deploy all available assets to deal with all those forms of criminality.”

“It is incumbent upon them that warning, if they wondering what will this ‘ka’ tiny fellow do to us, they have heard, and they will soon see,” Boinnet said.

Boinnet confirmed that the security agencies are pursing suspected bandits who killed a Secondary School student on Saturday afternoon as he was addressing a meeting at the Deputy County Commissioner’s office a few metres away.

The police boss said illegal grazers who have taken refuge in Ngelecha, Rugus hills and outlying areas of Baringo County have 48 hours to vacate.

“Most grazers have migrated to private farms in Mukutani, Monchongoi and Marigat areas for pasture due to drought in most of the Baringo, Samburu, Turkana Counties and neighbouring areas. This has created conflict amongst the communities in the area and prompted attacks and stealing of animals,” Boinett said as he called on the local leadership to support government in its efforts to bring peace in the affected areas
