NAIROBI, Kenya, Feb 5 – The Senate Committee on Finance has warned Narok Governor Samuel Tunai and Senator Stephen ole Ntutu against making public statements on the ongoing probe, on a petition into revenue collection at the Mara Conservancy.

Committee chairman Billow Kerrow said public pronouncements by the duo are hampering the investigations.

“The reason is very clear… even if you make all the noise, it not going to clear anybody or indict anybody. I think what is important is the facts,” Kerrow said.

He noted the Senator is barred by Standing Orders from discussing matters before a House team, while the Governor having appeared as a witness before the Senate team, should not make such statements.

Kerrow says they are waiting for the Auditor General’s report on the integrity of the systems being employed at the Maasai Mara.

The Senate team has also denounced reports that the Auditor General and Controller of Budget cleared the Governor of the allegations he’s facing.

“None of those institutions attempted to clear anybody. That is not their mandate to clear anyone. It’s up to this committee on the basis of all the evidence that it will gather whether there is an issue or no issue,” Kerrow told a news conference held at the Parliament buildings.

He urged residents to wait for the outcome of the investigations instead of demonstrating on the streets. Kerrow noted such remarks only sought to heighten anxiety among residents who need to know the truth about corruption allegations levelled against Governor Tunai.

The Governor has come under fire from Ntutu and MPs Moitalel ole Kenta (Narok North), Korei Lemein (Narok South), Patrick Ntutu (Narok West) and Johanna Ngeno (Emurua Dikirr), who have led several protests against him.

The leaders accuse Tunai of mismanaging resources, including proceeds from the famous Maasai Mara Game Reserve, and also sidelining locals in job allocations.

Governor Tunai on his part denied the claims saying the five leaders opposed to his leadership are angry because he dismantled cartels used to take money from the Masai Mara Game Reserve.

The five leaders were arrested for alleged incitement but were released on bond.
