Thursday’s by-election had less than 50 percent voter turnout.

HOMA BAY, Kenya, Feb 13 – Maendeleo Democratic Party candidate Philip Okundi says he will challenge results of Thursday’s Homa Bay Senatorial by-election which handed victory to his rival Moses Kajwang of Orange Democratic Movement (ODM).

Okundi has told journalists in Homa Bay that he had a parallel tallying centre which does not agree with official results announced by the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC).

He spoke even as Kajwang’ of ODM was formally declared Senator-elect for Homa Bay County after garnering 127,111 votes in the by-election. Okundi came in second with 27,637 votes, Rabongo came in third with 2,826 votes.

Kajwang’ beat his closest rival Okundi by close to 100,000 votes.

Kajwang’ replaces his elder brother the late Gerald Otieno Kajwang, a long serving politician who died in Nairobi late last year.
