NAIROBI, Kenya, Feb 19 – First Lady Margaret Kenyatta and her marathon training team hosted female media personalities at State House for an early Thursday morning training session in preparation for this year’s First Lady’s Half Marathon which is scheduled for March 8 at the Nyayo Stadium.

The female media personalities who joined the First Lady for the Training exercise included Renee Ngamau and Sharon Mundia from Capital FM; Smriti Vidyarthi, Victoria Rubadiri and Sheila Mwanyigha from the Nation Media Group; Beatrice Gatonye and Mbeki Mwalimu from KBC; Janet Mbugua and Julie Gichuru from Citizen TV; Isabella Kituri and Karen Kirimi from K24; Yvonne Okwara and Sophia Wanuna from KTN and Carol Radull and Caroline Mutoko from Radio Africa Group.

The female personalities were at State House by 5am ready for the training session as one of the ways in which they intend to support the First Lady in her quest to raise funds for the Beyond Zero Campaign and proceeded to run together with the first lady for 72 minutes covering 7kms.

The training session was led by renowned Kenyan athlete, Douglas Wakiihuri – who is the First Lady’s coach for the marathon – and Japheth Kariakim, the team physiotherapist.

The Beyond Zero campaign, an initiative by First Lady Margaret Kenyatta, aims at reducing the number of maternal deaths from the current figures to Beyond Zero by raising funds that go towards buying mobile clinics for all counties in Kenya in a bid to provide healthcare to all Kenyans.

Proceeds from last year’s marathon went towards buying 20 fully-kitted mobile clinics that have already been distributed to the respective beneficiary counties – whose selection was purely based on the gravity of maternal health needs. This year, the marathon intends to raise Sh600 million that will go towards purchasing the remaining 27 fully-kitted clinics. The marathon is poised to attract participation from over 40,000 participants drawing inspiration from last year’s success that saw participation from over 10,000 people.

Registration for the marathon is on-going at Sh1,500 per person at Uchumi, Nakumatt, Equity Bank and Nairobi Sports House branches countrywide and online at www.beyondzero.or.ke. Registration for corporate teams is also ongoing at Sh100,000 for teams of between five and 10 individuals.
