NAIROBI, Kenya, Jan 24 – Unity talks dominated the last day of a Jubilee legislators retreat in Naivasha amid some murmurs of rebellion following the formation of the Jubilee Alliance Party.

Legislators who spoke on condition of anonymity say President Uhuru Kenyatta who chaired the meeting insisted on the need for the Jubilee legislators to unite so as to advance his government’s agenda.

The President did not address journalists after the meeting which lasted for more than six hours and which was also attended by Jubilee governors and Cabinet Secretaries.

National Assembly Leader of Majority Aden Duale who addressed journalists after the meeting said both houses of parliament will work together more so in passing Bills sponsored by the Government.

“The PG (Parliamentary Group) resolved unanimously that henceforth, the Jubilee National Assembly and Senate parliamentary groups shall work as a single team,” he stated. “Working in full unanimity and cooperation at both houses. “

He noted that this will, “enable the alliance to develop greater synergies and accelerate the Jubilee alliances transformational momentum.”

The Senate has been complaining of being sidelined in the passage of various Bills that affects the County Governments.

The recent standoff was over the recently enacted Security Laws (Amendment) Act where the Senate was not given a chance to debate the Bill.

Senate Leader of Majority Kindiki Kithure on his part said already plans have been put in place to ensure the newly formed party is all inclusive.

He stated that consultations with smaller parties in the coalition will continue in a bid to speed up the merging of all political parties under the Jubilee Alliance Party.

Other issues discussed include formation of a strong political strategy to push the International Criminal Court to drop the case against the Deputy President William Ruto and Journalist Joshua arap Sang.

Also in the agenda was the forthcoming by-elections in Kajiado Central Constituency which is termed as the ‘litmus test’ to the new party.

“The Parliamentary Group unanimously endorsed and approved the formation of the Jubilee Alliance Party in order to have a stronger political movement which will deepen the unity of our people and provide a powerful force in national leadership,” Duale pointed out.

“To ensure no one is left behind the parliamentary group shall consult all affiliate parties in developing a road map towards merge to the new party.”
