The Kenya Red Cross Society says one more person was rescued from the rubble Monday/RED CROSS

NAIROBI, Kenya, Jan 5 – Two people have been confirmed dead and 38 others injured after a seven-storey building collapsed at Huruma estate in Nairobi on Sunday night.

The Kenya Red Cross Society says one more person was rescued from the rubble Monday, with an unknown number of people still feared trapped as rescue operations continued.

The building collapsed after the top four floors built in quick succession put pressure on the first three floors.

Nairobi County officials have since caught up with the owner of the building and are now in search of the developer.

The county executive in charge of Housing and Planning, Tom Odongo, defended the county government against accusations that they are not doing enough to ensure buildings in Nairobi are structurally sound.

Speaking to Capital FM News, Odongo said the responsibility of ensuring that a building is safe for habitation lies with the developer and the inhabitants.

The Kenyatta National Hospital recorded a total of 28 casualties: 12 male and 16 female with 25 patients treated and discharged.

Two of the patients are admitted having sustained multiple limb and soft tissue injuries.

The hospital is on alert in case more victims from the building collapse are brought in for specialised care.

Meanwhile those who survived the collapse say the building had displayed signs of poor construction.
