NAIROBI, Kenya, Jan 9 – Police have been asked to impound vehicles using unauthorised number plates as the government steps up security measures in the country.

Transport and Infrastructure Cabinet Secretary Michael Kamau says continued use of the number plates will compromise national security.

“It has come to the attention of the government that certain vehicles operating on public roads bear unauthorised personalised and unprescribed number plates. The use of these unauthorised number plates is not only illegal but compromises national security,” he stated.

“The law is clear and specifically the Traffic Act on the issuance and use of number plates for all vehicles using public roads in Kenya.”

Kamau says the issuance of number plates is a preserve of the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) warning that those found culpable are committing an offence and are liable to a fine of not less than Sh500,000 or a jail term not exceeding five years or both.

“The Ministry of Transport and Infrastructure has therefore advised the National Police Service to impound any vehicle on a public road with unprescribed number plates and arraign before court the owners and drivers of such vehicles. Members of the public are encouraged to notify the National Transport and Safety Authority of any vehicle displaying unprescribed number plates,” he said.

He has also asked individuals who want to have personalised number plates to apply and pay the prescribed fee to the National Transport and Safety Authority.

The move comes even as the country continues facing threats from the Somalia based Al-Shabaab terror group who have been responsible for numerous attacks in the country.

Other than adoption of tough security laws to curb the menace, police presence has been increased in all public places among other measures.
