NAIROBI, Kenya, Jan 19 – Acting Inspector General of Police Samuel Arachi has suspended the officer in charge of Monday’s operation at Lang’ata Road Primary School, where police officers used tear gas to disperse pupils.

He explained that the officer was suspended to pave way for further investigations over the incident.

Arachi also summoned all commanders in charge of the operation to provide an elaborate report on the confrontation, which was widely condemned by among other institutions, the Independent Policing Oversight Authority.

“We take great exception to officers who misuse their power and we have already summoned the commanders of these officers to come and provide an elaborate report on the occurrence,” he stated.

“We will never allow our officers to use force, not only on any citizen, but more so on children whether in demonstrations or otherwise.”

Administration Police spokesman Masoud Mwinyi who read out Arachi’s statement went ahead to condemn the involvement of children in demonstrations.

Arachi said he was saddened by the fact that children were brought on board to take part in a “demonstration which they ought to have nothing to do with.”

He stated that the protest was illegal, saying already investigations were underway to establish those behind it.

“Whereas our country appreciates and recognises the rights of her citizens to demonstrate among other rights, it is unfortunate that this particular demonstration had not been formerly authorised as the proper procedures to seek its staging had not been applied,” he pointed out.
