The ambulances worth Sh40 million were flagged off in Lusigetti, Kikuyu Town and will go a long way in improving and delivering the health services to Kiambu residents.
The ambulances that come equipped as mobile Intensive Care Units will be stationed in Level 4 hospitals across the county and also in the most remote areas of the county.
“An advance life support ambulance is not just a carrier but a mobile ICU and patients can be in the vehicles for over 5 hours before getting to the referral hospitals,” said the Governor during the launch.
The purchase of the ambulances come as a relief for county residents who often rely on other means to get patients especially expectant mothers to hospitals and this is expected to reduce the mortality rate that currently stands at 40 per 1000 births while the maternal mortality rate is 230 per 100,000 deliveries.
The Governor noted that the ambulance operators would undergo basic life support training with the Red Cross and on disaster response.
At the same time Kabogo warned the drivers against flouting traffic rules and ferrying non-authorized passengers saying that those found will be prosecuted.
The Governor also urged the County Assembly to fast track the Ambulance Bill that is already tabled. He announced that the county would be opening a Nacada Centre at Lusigetti Health Centre to mitigate the persistent drug issues within the county.
“We will soon launch a Nacada centre in Kikuyu to deal with the drug issues that have remained a challenge to the Kenyan youth,” he noted.
Kabogo reiterated his government’s commitment to improving the health sector and noted that the county had commissioned 14 dispensaries and community life centres across the county.
He called upon the county leaders to unite in developing the region which is economically rich saying that residents were only interested in development.
The County Executive Member for Health Dr Jonah Mwangi who was also present at the flagging off, said that additional facilities in the Level 4 hospitals were being done.
“We are in the process of constructing theatres and Lusiggetti and Lari level 4 hospitals have already been awarded to boost Mother, Neonatal and Child Health (MNCH),” he said.
The county has over 25 ambulances.
