The project to be managed by the Gatundu South Water and Sewerage Company is part of the county government’s plan to improve water and sanitation coverage from the current 35 percent to 60 percent or more in the next four years.
“It is the county’s agenda to reduce the unaccounted for water, to the current average of 45pc to less than 25pc,” said Governor William Kabogo during the launch.
The county government also intends to reduce the water rationing programs to ensure residents get water for five in a week instead of the current two days.
The Governor said that although there was high operational cost occasioned by high electricity, chemical costs and dilapidated infrastructure the county was committed to ensuring that every household has access to clean water before the end of the year.
On pollution, Governor Kabogo took issue with the industries and farms that don’t have proper outlets for their toxic waste urging them to invest in waste management to save the natural water resources that provide residents with water for domestic use from pollution.
“The Juja community draws water for their domestic needs from the spring although water from the reservoirs is likely to be chemically polluted due to coffee plantation at the upper areas. We need to device better methods of toxic waste management,” noted the Governor.
Kabogo at the same time sent a stern warning to individuals politicising the Kiambu Government development agenda, saying that Kiambu residents were only interested in the development agenda of the government.
He was referring to the Thika town demonstrations earlier in the month.
