Gunmen shoot church official dead in Mombasa

MAJENGO-CHURCH-SHOOTINGNAIROBI, Kenya, Jan 11 – A Church official was on Sunday shot dead by armed gangsters at the Maximum Revival Ministry Church in Majengo, Mombasa.

According to the police, George Mureki was accosted by two men armed with AK-47 rifles who shot him at point blank range.

Mombasa CID boss Henry Ondiek indicated that the attackers had targeted worshippers but were repulsed by two police officers who were manning the church that is situated within Mvita Primary School.

“One of the faithful who has a position in the Maximum Revival Ministry Church was being trailed by the unknown assailants who shot him dead. The compound houses several churches including a mosque and what I have been getting is that they (various faiths) have been cohabiting very well,” he stated.

Ondiek said the attackers escaped on a motorbike towards Majengo after the shooting which happened as the prayer service was in session.

“The compound is guarded by our officers and they were on the other end when this incident occurred. The compound has two gates and they were on the other side. That is why they managed to fire immediately and the assailants escaped. This is a very sad… This should be treated as an isolated incident,” he stated.

“He was shot at the entrance just as he was about to enter into the church but he ran and fell into the church. The presence of the police played a very vital role because immediately they heard the shots, they rushed to the scene and started engaging the assailants and we believe this may have been very important in preventing more casualties.”
