Families in tug of war over ‘Yebei’ body

“The key issue is the loss of our brother. The issue of the body is part of it, where is our brother? we want the government to look for him,” he urged.

Yebei’s elder brother said Hussein was an orphan and also did not have any other siblings but had distant relatives whose samples were taken for further investigations.

“What I hear he has no parents and siblings but has distant cousins, but according to us, they don’t have really a proper identification of the body, some of the relatives were saying it’s him others said he is not,” he explained.

Earlier, the team of investigators grilled human rights activist Ken Wafula for more than three hours at his office in Eldoret.

A section of politicians last week alleged that Wafula was one of the key suspects in the death of Yebei.

Yebei’s family recalled that he was last seen when he took his children to Turbo Health centre and left them with his wife to buy water but never returned.

A week after his disappearance, the family identified a body at Kapsabet Hospital mortuary as Yebei’s.

According to police records, a badly mutilated body discovered along River Yala on December 28 was taken to the mortuary for identification.

John Kariuki who is leading the team of investigators said though fingerprints had confirmed that the body belonged to Hussein and not Yebei, further DNA results to be released before next week will be the final results to ascertain the identity of the body in question.
