NAIROBI, Kenya, Jan 8 – The National Gun Owners Association of Kenya (NGAO) has called on the Interior Cabinet Secretary and Inspector General of Police to take a stern action against licensed civilian gun holders found guilty of misuse.

The organisation in a statement says there is need for careful and regular vetting of 6,000 licensed gun holders to ensure everyone entrusted with responsibility of owning a firearm is accountable.

The organisation’s Secretary General Anthony Wahome says a section of civilian gun owners members risk damaging the reputation of responsible members through rising incidents of gun misuse.

“Firearms are not meant for use during domestic disputes; in public places; during road-use conflict; or where danger is not imminent to the owner of the firearm, their family or their property,” he pointed out.

He specifically noted that; “firearms are especially not to be used when the owner is intoxicated.”

“As an association we are especially concerned that these few irresponsible licensed firearm owners are giving the remaining close to 6,000 responsible firearm owners a bad name with the rest of the Kenyan population.”

The National Gun Owners Association is mandated in promoting responsible and safe gun ownership amongst particularly civilians, who are duly licensed to carry firearms as enshrined under Firearms Act (Chapter 114) laws of Kenya.

They also partner with security agencies wherever possible to provide information that can be used to enhance the security of the country.

The association further “promotes utmost proficiency in the carrying, handling, maintenance, storage and use of firearms particularly by civilian licensed firearm carriers through training.”
