KISUMU, Kenya, Dec 6 – The National Alliance (TNA) party has rejected a proposal by the Orange Democratic Movement demanding a direct nomination for the Kajiado Central constituency seat.

TNA Secretary General Onyango Oloo told ODM to brace for a fierce battle for the seat should the current area MP Joseph Nkaissery be confirmed as the Interior Cabinet Secretary.

“I am shocked if not utterly devastated to hear that now he wants to be given a free pass to present a candidate unopposed; never, never not as long as The National Alliance and the Jubilee coalition is in contention for political leadership. He must ready himself and be willing to contend with us in the political battle for Kajiado Central and Homabay.”

He urged ODM to stay true to the democracy it proclaims and give the people of Kajiado Central the chance to elect a leader of their choice, further pointing out that already, TNA has five candidates interested in the Homabay senatorial race.

“This is not just about presenting of candidates. We will have to evaluate them before presenting them before the people of Homabay to make a choice. As for Kajiado, we have more than three serious candidates who had presented themselves in the last election and who performed exceedingly well in that election,” Onyango said.

The CORD leadership during Friday’s National Governing council meeting had threatened to rally its supporters to oppose the nomination of Nkaissery unless its candidate was allowed to run unopposed in the upcoming by-election.

ODM leader Raila Odinga argued that the Jubilee administration was trying to weaken the party’s strength in the National Assembly by nominating Nkaissery.

A section of legislators from the Maa community while lauding the decision by President Kenyatta to nominate Nkaissery to the Interior docket said they would reward him by ensuring a candidate from the Jubilee coalition clinched the seat.
