NAIROBI, Kenya, Dec 20 – Three people died while six others sustained serious injuries in a head on collision involving two personal vehicles near Diatomite, Elementaita along the Naivasha-Nakuru highway.

The 5 am accident occurred when the driver of the Nairobi bound vehicle swerved into the lane of the other vehicle heading to Kitale causing the head-on collision.

According to Chris Otuma, driver of the Kitale bound car, the driver of the Nairobi bound vehicle was driving in the wrong lane and on trying to swerve, it was a little too late and the two vehicles collided.

“I was coming from Nairobi heading to Kitale with four adults and a child aboard my car. The other guy tried swerving towards my lane and that is when we collided head on,” said Otuma.

Rift Valley Provincial Traffic boss Mary Omari cautioned road users to observe road regulations and void driving at dangerous speeds to prevent loss of lives especially during this festive season when many people will be travelling to different places.

“We are warning drivers especially those driving public service vehicles to be vigilant. As a traffic department, we will not allow loss of lives through reckless driving and hence we are implementing thorough crackdown on those who do not follow the law,” said Omari.

Two victims who were rushed to the St. Mary’s Hospital are reported to be in critical condition and are awaiting transfer to other hospitals for specialized treatment.

The accident comes barely two weeks after another that claimed the lives of five family members along the same stretch.
