The former Starehe legislator was formerly in the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) but left after what she termed as betrayal despite her loyalty to Raila Odinga’s party.
Wanjiru accused the Nairobi County Government of failing to deliver quality services to the city residents while insisting that her desire to be governor of Nairobi was still on.
“The roads are impassable full of street children and endless traffic jams. This is crippling our economy and is a health hazard to our being,” she stated amid cheers from her followers who had accompanied her to TNA headquarters.
“The county is extremely dirty with non-functioning sewerage, potholes are all over and trees and the flowers are slowly disappearing.”
Wanjiru said she was in a better position to win the city gubernatorial seat, “while in TNA. This is where I belong.”
“During the last campaigns I shared my vision for Nairobi and I promised Nairobians a new city. Despite numerous trials, the vision is still alive and it shall surely come to pass. I promise the women of this county that one day when I will be Nairobi Governor; I will empower you spiritually, socially and economically.”
She specifically called on the removal of stringent laws by the County Government directed at small traders.
“Orders that result to throwing tear gas and killing hawkers in Nairobi are indeed a very sad situation. Nairobians are diligent and they will not sit in the house and die of poverty, instead they will wake up and go out to the field looking for ways and means to feed their families,” she said.
“My promise to the small traders is that one day I will build a modern market for you…markets that will meet international standards where all hawkers and other small traders can make a genuine income without fighting with authorities.”
TNA Secretary General Onyango Oloo on his part said the move will boost the party in expanding its network in the city.
“We welcome all people without minding their tribe or religion affiliations,” he stated.
Bishop Wanjiru started her journey on October 11 when she announced that she had left the Raila Odinga-led party after she was denied the opportunity to vie for the Nairobi gubernatorial seat during the last General Election.
“My son the Member of Parliament for Mathare Constituency Stephen Kariuki is in ODM but Bishop Margaret Wanjiru left ODM long time ago,” she stated.
The former legislator tried to vie for the seat on an ODM ticket but was disqualified after it emerged that her degree was not recognised and accused the party of doing nothing to save her situation.
“After what they did against me, I decided enough is enough and I can tell you the way it is even within the 47 counties… there is not a single Governor as a woman,” she affirmed.
“That’s why they dropped me, so that I cannot make the first one.”
Wanjiru had defended her Doctor of Theology degree from Vineyard Harvester Bible College and Bachelor’s degree in Christian Leadership from United Graduate College.
