Survivor back at collapsed flat ‘to see what God saved me from’

He sat at the periphery of the rubble, shocked, in just a vest and boxers, unable to say anything.

“It’s only when I heard someone say that they must all be dead that I spoke up. If I made it out alive, others might too.”

On being identified as a survivor of the collapse, a good Samaritan offered Stanley some of his clothes and he was rushed to the Kenyatta National Hospital.

“My neighbour Eric Wambugu and I were the first to be transported there. My dad even came all the way from Nyeri to see me. I spent the night at my brother’s house. I don’t think I realised until this just how much they love me.”

Stanley returned to the site of the collapse on Thursday against the advice of his family.

“They thought it would only traumatise me further. But when I saw the state my neighbours were brought to the hospital in, I felt like I had no business convalescing. I thought coming back would help me make sense of why I made it out okay but others didn’t when there’s nothing I could have done that they didn’t for God to spare their lives.”

It’s a question, he says, that’ll be the subject of his next song.

“At my age I’ve always been sceptical when older people stand up in church to give unbelievable testimonies. Now it’ll be me up there because he did it for me too. I wouldn’t be standing here today if it wasn’t for him.”
