NAIROBI Kenya, Dec 30 – Mombasa Republican Council (MRC) Chairman Omar Mwamnuadzi together with five other members were on Tuesday charged for holding an illegal meeting at his home in Kombani, Kwale County.

The six pleaded not guilty before Mombasa Chief Magistrate Stephen Riech.

Mwamnuadzi was arrested at his Kombani home on Monday following claims by police that they were holding an illegal meeting. They were charged with taking part in an unlawful assembly contrary to section 79 of the penal code.

His wife who was detained by police during the raid was on Tuesday released after hours of grilling.

The separatist leader Mwamnuadzi who was out on bond for a similar offence committed on October was released together with his counterpart on Sh500,000 bond with two similar sureties.

The group has strongly denied claims by the outgoing Inspector General of Police David Kimaiyo that it has established links with the Somali based militias, Al Shabaab.

The National Intelligence Service has since warned that the group was regrouping and planning more attacks in Coastal region.

MRC top leaders have repeatedly dismissed the allegation insisting the group abides by the rule of law.
