President Kenyatta said he was deeply saddened by the death of a man he described as a “selfless political legend”/FILE

NAIROBI, Kenya Dec 6 – Leaders have mourned former Cabinet Minister and Kenya African National Union (KANU) Secretary General John Joseph Kamotho, who died on Friday night in South Africa.

They were led by President Uhuru Kenyatta and former President Daniel arap Moi.

President Kenyatta said he was deeply saddened by the death of a man he described as a “selfless political legend”.

The Head of State described him as an amiable and extremely pleasant person.

“It was because of his outstanding leadership that former President Moi appointed him Higher Education minister in 1979. Later, he was appointed minister for Transport, Education, Trade, Environment and Local Government,” said the President.

On his part, Moi said he had learnt of the death with deep sorrow and a profound sense of loss, praying to God to give the bereaved family the necessary fortitude to bear the loss.

He said besides politics, Kamotho was a personal friend for many years describing him as an energetic, thoughtful and indefatigable public servant who contributed immensely in making KANU a robust system in the service of the people.

Other leaders who sent their message of condolences include Deputy President William Ruto who described Kamotho as the most unforgettable political party administrator in independence Kenya.

Ruto said he was saddened by the passing of Kamotho who he described as a patriot, friend, brother and colleague.

He said Kamotho’s legend in Kenyan politics speaks for itself adding that he was perhaps the most unforgettable political party administrator in independence Kenya.

He applauded his years of public service as a legislator, and Cabinet Minister.

“To the family, friends, supporters, and the people of Murang’a I send you my heartfelt condolences and I assure you of the prayers of my family and myself. May the Lord keep you strong and rest JJ in Eternal Peace,” Ruto added.

Coalition for Reforms and Democracy (CORD) leader Raila Odinga described The late minister as a brave, strong and principled leader who spoke his mind and never shied from taking a stand on critical issues.

“The family will be in our thoughts and prayers and I wish them fortitude and courage to come to terms with their grief, added Odinga.

Kamotho served as Secretary-General of the then ruling party KANU for 13 years, from 1989 to 2002.

He started his long political career in 1974 when he was elected Kangema MP.
