KIAMBU, Kenya, Dec 17 – The Kiambu County Government has been recognised as the best county in gender diversity and inclusivity of people living with disability at the National Gender and Persons with Disability awards.

The awards organised by the Gender and Disability Development Centre reflect the county’s commitment to diversity in leadership, governance, excellence in service and distinction in creating an environment that is favourable for men, women and persons living with disability within the county.

Speaking during the awards ceremony, the County Executive Member in charge of Gender and Social services Esther Ndirangu noted that the award came at a time when the county is running a programme called Biashara Fund aimed at women, youth and people living with disability (PLWDs).

Ndirangu said that the Kiambu County Government had met all the provisions in the Constitution noting that the county Cabinet comprises two thirds women and the Public Service Board has ensured the third gender rule in all recruitments including PLWDs.

She said that the county has purchased assistive equipment for PLWDs worth Sh500,000 to empower the disadvantaged in the society. The equipment she said includes among others, polio boot/callipers, wheelchairs, tricycles, crutches, walking canes and white cane.

She was quick to add that the county has been doing civic education, and urged the residents to elect women and PLWDs. She asserted that the county had organised women forums severally to sensitise them on the government opportunities open to them.

“To achieve the 30 percent procurement rule, the county has partnered with PPOA (Public Procurement Oversight Authority) to educate the youth, women and PLWDs on how to benefit from the rule. This has enabled the groups to apply and be considered for tenders,” she said.

She reiterated the county’s commitment to service delivery and inclusivity.
