NAIROBI, Kenya, Dec 1 – The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) announced on Monday that the Homabay senatorial by-election to replace Otieno Kajwang is to be held on Monday, February 2, 2015.

In a statement, the commission’s acting Chief Executive Officer Betty Nyabuto said political parties are to nominate their candidates on December 19.

“The delivery of nomination papers to IEBC will take place on January 5 and 6, 2015. The campaigns commence thereafter, upto January 30 – 48hours to the date of the by-election,” she said.

The Homabay Senate seat fell vacant after the death of Otieno Kajwang on November 18. The law requires that a by-election is held within 90 days from the occurrence of a vacancy.

IEBC said the County Returning Officer will be gazetted and issued with a notice to conduct the poll by the IEBC Chairman, Ahmed Issack Hassan.

Homabay County has six constituencies namely Kasipul Kabondo, Karachuonyo, Rangwe, Ndhiwa, Mbita and Gwasi.

Kajwang was buried on Friday at his Waondo home in Mbita constituency. He was a luminary of the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) party and a staunch ally of its leader and opposition chief Raila Odinga.
