Speaking During the KNUT 57th annual National Delegates Conference, Sossion said there is need for gender equity in the education sector pointing out that there are few women in leadership positions.
“Very many women teachers are still disadvantaged in leadership positions either as heads of institutions or leadership in other capacities in the education sector. We cannot advance the rights of the girl child if we cannot give capacity to the women,” he said.
He said that gender equality in the education sector is still a challenge, urging TSC to come up with a clear gender framework that will see equity in the teaching service.
“The girl child is still disadvantaged and where we have made successes, the boy child is getting disadvantaged and therefore we must address gender issues very effectively and tomorrow we shall be launching the gender manual that will guide the programs of the union from January 2015 and beyond,” he added.
He urged women in the union to rise to the occasion and play competitive and equal roles with the male counterparts in the teaching service.

The delegates are also expected come up with the next course of action at the three-day conference, following failure by the government to settle an outstanding pay dispute.
The main conference will begin Monday with the theme ‘Invest in the Teacher, Invest in the Future’ and will be opened by Deputy President William Ruto, with Education Principal Secretary Kipsang’ Belio expected to attend.
TSC Secretary Gabriel Lengoiboni will also speak at the conference.
