NAIROBI, Kenya, Dec 6 – The CORD leadership has congratulated President Uhuru Kenya following the withdrawal of his case by the International Criminal Court (ICC).

In a statement sent to newsrooms, the coalition’s leader Raila Odinga stated that dropping of the charges was not only a personal triumph for President Kenyatta but also of great significance to the country.

“After a long drawn legal contest, the International Criminal Court withdrew charges against President Uhuru Kenyatta in regard to the post-election violence of 2007-2008. It is my hope that with this burden taken away, my brother, President Uhuru Kenyatta will now focus all his energies and attention on serving the people of Kenya to the best of his ability,” read part of the statement.

His counterpart, Senate Minority Leader Moses Wetang’ula while congratulating President Kenyatta, also took the time to wish Deputy President William Ruto and former broadcaster Joshua arap Sang the best and expressed hope that they will also receive fair judgement and be set free to discharge their duties.

“This will now give the president ample time to execute his duties without any divided attention,” Wetang’ula said.

President Kenyatta was initially facing charges alongside Francis Muthaura and ex-police chief Hussein Ali whose cases were dropped.

President Kenyatta’s role in the 2007 post election violence according to Bensouda had been that of financial and logistical support to the perpetrators.

The case against Ruto and Sang is ongoing at The Hague and is due to adjourn on December 12.
