Police and the Kenya Red Cross have confirmed the attack that occurred at a quarry in Koromey area, about 15 kilometers from Mandera town.
“Thirty six people are feared dead, our team is on the ground undertaking assessment of the attack,” the Kenya Red Cross said.
Reports indicate that those killed are quarry workers who were ambushed by heavily armed militants at 1am.
“They were ordered to lie down before they were shot,” a police source speaking to Capital FM News from Mandera said, adding that “those who proved that they are Muslims were spared.”
When contacted, Police Spokesperson Zipporah Mboroki confirmed the incident but said she was unable to provide more details.
“I am trying to get as much details as I can from the ground, please get in touch with the County Commander in Mandera,” she said.
Inspector General of Police David Kimaiyo was said to be in a crisis security meeting after receiving the report.
There are reports that some of the workers were kidnapped by the attackers in the incident that comes barely a week after the deadly Mandera bus attack in which 28 people were killed.
