NAIROBI, Kenya, Nov 25 – It is the first time since the sudden death of Homabay Senator Otieno Kajwang’ that his widow Rose Ojwang’ and father David Ajwang’ have spoken publicly about his demise.

Speaking during a visit by legislators from both Houses of Parliament, the two passionately told of the life of a man they loved and cherished in equal measure – one calling him son and the other husband.

First it was the man who bore him.

“This is one person who has made me keep goats because he could bring friends at any time. I told the family that when his friends come, a goat must be slaughtered; I said I would bear whatever cost because I wouldn’t want to disappoint Gerald; Gerald made friends you have made us happy and your prayers have kept us strong,” said Ajwang’.

After learning of the death of his son last week, Ajwang’ collapsed at his rural home.

On Tuesday, he spoke of his son whom he fondly referred to as Gerald, pointing out that his achievements had set precedence for his brothers and sisters further joking that his fear was that he couldn’t afford to make those dreams and aspirations come true due to costs.

“His example has also been dangerous to me because he chose to become a lawyer and because of that the whole family has been trying to become lawyers. Right now I think we have seven lawyers in the family,” Ajwang’ said amid cheers from the legislators.

One could easily tell where Kajwang’s sense of humour came from as the father affectionately cracked jokes as he told of the life and times of the former Homabay Senator.

His sentiments were shared by Kajwang’s widow, Rose, who dotingly talked about their journey as a couple.

“I was living with my sister in Buruburu and I was on the bus to Buruburu, number 58 and I saw this man, tall, black but with very white teeth. I entered the bus and sat and he came in and told me, let me sit here. After five minutes, the bus broke down,” she recalled.

They boarded another bus and it also broke down forcing them to take another.

Rose went on to tell their love story which was based on the events of the day they met as they ended up at a crusade.

“That day there was a crusade in Buruburu shopping centre and I told him that I normally go there because I usually take my sister’s little boy for bible study, and he told me I also have been going there. I only learnt later on that he had never been there… so Gerald was a funny man,” his widow said stirring laughter from the crowd.

The story clearly described the humorous nature of the late Kajwang’.

And despite her loss she has kept hope alive.

“I loved my husband and I still love him, and I know that one day in heaven I will meet him because he was good man…he was a handsome man and I am going to miss him,” she added.

Also present was Kajwang’s son who throughout the whole session sat quietly between his mother and grandfather.
