NAIROBI, Kenya, Nov 7- The National Police Service Commission on Friday appointed seven officers to the rank of senior assistant inspector general of police.

63 others were appointed to the rank of assistant inspector general of police and 102 as commissioners of police.

The commission Chairman Johnston Kavuludi said 172 officers have been appointed, out of 198 officers who were vetted.

“In the course of making these appointments, no officer vetted and found suitable has been left out of these appointments,” he stated.

Kavuludi said names of the officers will be released, once they are formally informed.

He told a press conference that the new ranks were in line with the ongoing police reforms set to improve effectiveness within the police service.

“These new ranks reflect a structure that will bring about improved effectiveness and efficiency in our National Police Service,” he said.

The commission further scrapped off the ranks of Deputy Commissioner of Police, Senior Deputy Commissioner of Police 1 and 2 and Assistant commissioner of police.

“The commission has approved these appointments and the Inspector General shall proceed and deploy those officers accordingly,” he stated.

He also said police vetting was still ongoing until all 50,000 officers in the country undergo the exercise. Currently, Senior Superintendent and Superintendent of police are being vetted.

The overall objective of the vetting is to build confidence and trust in the National Police Service.

Officers who satisfy the commission with regard to competence and suitability will be retained and those who do not will be removed from the service.
