KISII, Kenya, Nov 15 – President Uhuru Kenyatta has cautioned leaders to weigh their words to avoid creating disharmony among Kenyans.

He said being in opposition is not tantamount to being an enemy of the ruling coalition, saying it was irresponsible for any leader to utter words that could divide citizens even if one is in the opposition.

“You do not cease to be a Kenyan just because you are in the opposition. And as Kenyans, we cannot afford to be enemies. I was also once in the opposition but I was never an enemy of the government of that time,” he said.

President Kenyatta, who was speaking during a leaders’ meeting in Kisii on Saturday, said he will continue working with all elected leaders irrespective of party affiliation.

“Wananchi exercised their democratic right by electing leaders of their choice. It does not matter on which political party one was elected. What matters to wananchi now is the service they get and therefore we should be able to separate issues,” said the President.

Responding to issues raised by the leaders, President Kenyatta said his is a government of all Kenyans and it will continue incorporating all communities in job vacancies which will arise from time to time.

He challenged county governments to emulate the national government by ensuring they casted their nets wider and employed qualified staff not only from the local communities but from across the country.

The President said Kisii and Nyamira counties will benefit from the mega infrastructural projects being undertaken by the national government among them the 10,000 km road infrastructure annuity programme.

He pointed out that early next year the national government will start the construction of the initial 2,000 Km of the programme which will include major roads in the two counties.

On education, President Kenyatta said all primary and secondary schools in the country will have been connected to the national grid by the end of this financial year.

“This means all school neighbouring communities will benefit from this programme,” he added.

On Suneka airstrip, the President said the government has set aside funds to upgrade several airstrips in the country and Suneka is one of them.

He also said the Kisii level 5 hospital will benefit from a Memorandum of Understanding between the Kenyan and Chinese governments, in which the latter will provide critical equipment required in public health hospitals.

Leaders led by Kisii Governor James Ongwae, his Nyamira counterpart John Nyagarama and Senator Chris Obure pledged to work closely with the national Government to ensure better and quality services to wananchi.

“As the leadership of Kisii we want to partner with the national Government to champion the cause of the Kisii community,” said Senator Obure.
