The First Lady spoke when she laid the foundation stone of the Medical Practitioners and Dentists Board office complex
NAIROBI, Kenya, Nov 13 – First Lady Margaret Kenyatta has called for efficiency among health workers so as to restore the confidence of Kenyans in the public health sector.
She said the right of Kenyans to access quality healthcare is an integral part of the Constitution and assured that the government will safeguard Kenyans’ aspirations and health rights.
“Their desire is to live in a secure, clean environment where democracy and human rights are respected and accorded to all,” she affirmed.
The First Lady spoke when she laid the foundation stone of the Medical Practitioners and Dentists Board office complex at woodlands road, near Hurlingham, Nairobi.
She challenged the health ministry to equip public health outlets with the right staff and equipment, saying a workforce is critical to the country.
“We want Kenyans to go to public health institutions with confidence that they are in safe hands and that they will leave the facilities alive and well,” the First Lady said.
She said improved services will attract Kenyans who go to private hospitals.
Health Cabinet Secretary James Macharia expressed his gratitude to the Medical Practitioners and Dentists Board for ensuring that the shortage of medical practitioners in the country is dealt with.
Migori Senator Wilfred Machage commended the First Lady for spearheading the campaign to reduce maternal and child mortality in the country, saying her efforts have greatly contributed in fulfilling the Millennium Development Goal Number 5. Senator Machage is a member of Medical Practitioners and Dentists Board and also the Senate Committee on Health.
The chairman of the Medical Practitioners and Dentists Board George Magoha praised the First Lady for not only launching but maintaining the ‘Beyond Zero’ campaign.
He said the achievement of 66 percent of women accessing quality maternal health care is partly due to the initiative spearheaded by the First Lady.
During the occasion, University of Nairobi contributed Sh5 million to the ‘Beyond Zero’ campaign.
