Over 800,000 candidates are sitting the examinations in 24,000 centres, according to the Kenya National Examinations Council (KNEC).
A spot check by Capital FM News at the Moi Avenue Primary School revealed that the examinations were proceeding smoothly, according to the head teacher Eunice Mlati.
“The exam started well at 8.30am. We have prepared them and given them a lot of practice papers and we been doing exams every month. We do not expect them now to see the one they are doing now as a strange exam,” she said.
A number of students who were interviewed exuded confidence saying that they were well prepared for the examinations.
“I had studied enough at home and I think I am going to score very good marks. I also had a lot of help from my teachers and this is giving me confidence,” Joyce Wanja, a student at the school stated.
“We are really prepared for the national exams, we have confidence that we are going to succeed in all subjects. We did a lot of work and hope that we shall see good results come next year. For the rest of my colleagues, have heart and be confident,” her colleague John Kamau said.
In Mombasa, 15,955 class pupils are sitting their examinations in 343 centers.
County Director of Education Abdikadir Kike said that there were no irregularities in the four sub-counties of Changamwe, Likoni, Kisauni and Mombasa Island.
A total of 19 inmates at the Shimo la Tewa prison facility are also sitting this year’s KCPE examination.
Mombasa County Commander Robert Kitur says security has been enhanced in all examination centers to ensure exams are not disrupted and pointed out that there was a police chopper on standby to respond to any incident.
KNEC has contracted supervisors, 55,505 invigilators, 48,576 security personnel and 6,071 drivers for the three-day nationwide examination.
Authorities further gave the assurance that more security personnel had been deployed to watch over schools in Baringo County where more than 12,000 candidates are writing the examinations.
This followed fears over their safety after the killing of 22 police officers in Kapedo in Turkana.
Some of the areas hit by insecurity include parts of Marigat, Baringo North and Tiaty constituency where heavy security has been deployed to secure examination centres.
