NAIROBI, Kenya, Nov 24 – A funeral service for Homabay Senator Otieno Kajwang is to be held on Wednesday at Nairobi’s Uhuru Park, the funeral committee announced on Monday.

Speaking during a media briefing on the progress of the late Senator’s burial arrangements, Chairman of the Coordinating Committee George Mboya said there will be a public viewing of the body at the park.

The public service will be preceded by another for family and close friends at the Nairobi Central SDA Church starting at 8am to 10am.

“We will hold a public viewing and interdenominational prayer meeting from 10am and the journey to go to Waondo will start on Thursday. We will go through Kisumu’s Jomo Kenyatta Sport Ground where there will be another public viewing, thereafter the entourage will move to Waondo via Mbita. On Friday we expect to have the burial,” Mboya said.

The significance of the Uhuru Park prayers will not be lost to many who will remember Kajwang’s last public address at the site was during the CORD Saba-Saba rally in July.

At the same time, Siaya Senator James Orengo who is the family spokesperson refused to comment on recent drama surrounding the late Senator’s family after a woman last week caused a stir at the Lee Funeral Home claiming she was married to Kajwang’s for the last 21 years.

“I think this will come out at a later time, but we understand your concerns,” Orengo said when asked to comment on the matter.

Kajwang’ passed away at the Mater Hospital last Tuesday after what was said to be a heart attack.

President Uhuru Kenyatta described the late Kajwang’ as an eloquent debater, a patriot and a nationalist; while Deputy President William Ruto said the late Senator distinguished himself as one of Kenya’s brilliant lawyers and was a man of principle who loved his country.

On his part, Orange Democratic Movement leader Raila Odinga eulogised the Homabay Senator as a great leader who was known for his oratory skills and eloquence while articulating party ideals.
