NAIROBI, Kenya, Nov 20 – First Lady Margaret Kenyatta has launched a new partnership programme that aims to support and promote cooperation between Kenya and China.

Under the programme dubbed “Love for Kenya: China-Africa People-to-People Friendship Action”, Huawei Technologies (Kenya) is partnering with “Shades of Hope” to reduce the spread of HIV/AIDS in rural areas in the country.

Already voluntary medical male circumcision (VMMC) has been carried out to over 400 boys and men in Samburu County.
The initiates have also received voluntary counseling and testing.

Speaking during the launch at a Nairobi hotel, the First Lady thanked the Chinese Embassy for accelerating the programme by implementing projects at a cost of Sh5,850,000 ($65,000).

“I am informed that this year, ZTE Corporation (Kenya) is now working with the Forum for African Women Educationalists (FAWE) to implement a Women’s Entrepreneurship program that will empower 100 women in Western Kenya in financial management and entrepreneurship skills,” the First Lady said.

She added that the programmes are in line with the government’s priorities to benefit Kenyans.

“Implementation of the two projects will help to improve the well-being of the Kenyan people and strengthen the understanding and friendship between our two peoples,” said the First Lady.

She said relations between Kenya and China have flourished and its benefits felt across all human endeavors in the last 50 years.

“It is important to note that ties between China and Kenya are based on sound values alongside shared aspirations. The bilateral relations have for the past half a century closely followed the course of mutual respect and common development,” she said.

She expressed hope that the existing cordial relations and strong people-to-people ties will continue bolstering cooperation between the two countries.
