NAIROBI, Kenya, Nov 28 – Director of Public Prosecutions Keriako Tobiko has ordered a probe into threats made by two bloggers against Mombasa Senator Hassan Omar.

In a letter to the Criminal Investigation Department, Tobiko wants the investigations against bloggers Mugo Wa Wairimu and Willy Omosa to be treated as an urgent matter.

“In light of the foregoing, and pursuant to the provisions of Article 157 (4) of the Constitution, I do forward the said complaint and direct you to cause a speedy investigation,” said Tobiko.

Omar told the House on Thursday that bloggers Wairimu and Omosa, through a series of hate posts, have advocated for his assassination.

He expressed fears for his life, taking cognisance of the fact that the two bloggers enjoy huge following on Facebook and Twitter.

“These bloggers have called for my death, alleging I have links with the Al-Shabaab terror group,” he continued: “I have never been scared in my life, but there is a red line which has been crossed. We do not live in a kangaroo State where people publish that kind of information and get away with it,” the Mombasa County Senator said.

“They openly called for my killing on various dates of the last one month,” stated Omar who has been opposing the recent police crackdown on mosques at the Coast under the guise of the war against terror.

The Senate on Thursday discussed the threats against Omar and asked authorities to investigate the complaints against the two bloggers.

Majority Leader Kithure Kindiki, Minority Leader Moses Wetang’ula, Senators Mutahi Kagwe (Nyeri), Billow Kerrow (Mandera) and Boni Khalwale (Kakamega) demanded the government offers Omar protection.
