NAIROBI, Kenya, Nov 5 – The Director of Public Prosecutions has ordered a fresh probe into the alleged forgery of Mombasa Governor Hassan Joho’s degree.

The order was issued by Keriako Tobiko after he received a petition, according to a post on the DPP’s Twitter account.

“DPP Tobiko today ordered fresh investigations into alleged forgery of degree certificate by Governor Hassan Joho. This follows a petition by Silas Otuke.”

The High Court in Mombasa last month dismissed a petition which was challenging the validity of Joho’s degree certificate.

The three-judge bench ruled that the case was premature because petitioners had not exhausted all other constitutional mechanisms to determine the validity of the degree.

The petitioners had argued that Joho’s Kampala University degree which he used to secure clearance to vie for the gubernatorial seat was invalid.

On May 18, Kampala University Vice Chancellor Badry Kateregga insisted Joho’s degree was authentic.

Ahead of the March 2013 General Election, a voter in Mombasa moved to court to bar Joho from the election.

Joho was nonetheless cleared to run for the gubernatorial seat but after winning, he had to grapple with a court case until it was dismissed last month.
