The union had issued a strike notice for Wednesday to protest failure by the county government to honour the payment that the two parties had negotiated earlier this year.
County Secretary Lillian Ndegwa stated that the first batch of Sh265 million would be paid on Tuesday while the remaining sum will be released by Wednesday next week.
“Because of the way our revenues come in and also because of the delays that we had from the National Government in making this month’s remittances, we were late in paying salaries and again we have found ourselves in a situation where we were not able to pay the arrears in good time,” she stated.
The union’s Nairobi County Branch Chairman Benson Oliang’a lauded the move by the county government and expressed hope that the remaining Sh600 million owed to workers will be paid by the end of the year.
“We are giving this management a chance and a test so that they can make sure that they fulfill what they have promised because what we are asking for is not something for yesterday, it is something that started in 2012,” he said.
Under the agreement, the salary arrears were to be paid out in October 2014 with a final settlement of Sh600m being concluded in December 2014.
