NAIROBI, Kenya, Nov 13 – The Chinese Ambassador to Kenya, Liu Xianfa, has awarded scholarships to 20 needy students at the University of Nairobi, as part of an initiative to support disadvantaged youth.

Ambassador Liu awarded certificates and funds to the second recipients of the “Annual Chinese Ambassador” scholarships.

The scholarships are an initiative of the Chinese Ambassador to help the many promising young Kenyan youths realise their dreams. It targets students with excellent academic performance but facing financial challenges.

This follows a memorandum of understanding signed between the University of Nairobi and the Chinese Embassy in Kenya last year, in which the embassy provides about Sh2 million annually to the university to award 20 students with Sh100,000 for each student.

Henry Mutolo, the deputy Vice-chancellor Academic Affairs at the university who spoke on behalf of Vice-Chancellor said the award is a “demonstration of the special relationship the university enjoys with the Chinese Embassy in Kenya that spans over 10 years”.

Each year, the Chinese government provides over 500 government scholarships and high-level training opportunities.

They have established three Confucius Institutes and one Confucius Class in Kenya and the 4th one is to be launched soon at Moi University.

Ambassador Liu said he “would like to become a sincere friend of Kenyan youth and create more opportunities for young people of the two countries to strengthen friendship and enhance mutual exchanges and learning.”
