KISUMU, Kenya, Oct 22 – Kisumu County Assembly Speaker Ann Atieno Adul has been impeached by the assembly over alleged gross misconduct.

Thirty nine MCAs voted to have her impeached, three voted to keep her in office while six others abstained from voting.

Among the accusations levelled against the Speaker is taking the mace to the police station, paralysing operations of the assembly for a week.

The assembly convened on Tuesday after the MCAs managed to get the mace from the police station where Adul had deposited it for safe custody.

West Nyakach ward representative James Omollo moved a motion to impeach the Speaker.

Temporary Speaker Samuel Ombogo read the notice of the motion to the members who debated and passed a resolution to impeach her.

Ombogo later offered a chance to the Speaker to come before the full House Committee to defend herself against the accusation but she failed to show up.

The members then decided to vote and after the vote, the Temporary Speaker declared the seat vacant and ordered the Office of the Clerk to advertise the position.

However, Seme East ward representative Aggrey Ogosi, one of the MCAs who abstained from voting termed the impeachment illegal.

Ogosi says the Speaker last week adjourned the assembly indefinitely and it had not reconvened.

“The Speaker of the County Assembly of Kisumu is still the Speaker. She is the one who suspended the assembly last week and she is the only one who can re-convene it,” Ogosi said, “what happened here today (Tuesday) is an illegality because the Speaker had obtained a court order blocking her impeachment.”
