Baringo County Speaker charged over incitement

NAIROBI, Kenya, Oct 31 – Baringo County Assembly Speaker Kassait Kamket together with two County Assembly Members have been charged with incitement following recent attacks that rocked the area.

Kamket, Lotela Nelson and Daniel Tuwit were arraigned at the Eldoret Law Courts accused of making inflammatory utterances which led to the killing of five people in Kapedo.

The three appeared before Eldoret Resident Magistrate Tom Olando and were released on a cash bail of Sh100,000 each.

Kamket was arrested and detained at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport Wednesday night while travelling to Istanbul, Turkey.

His lawyer Kipkoech Ng’etich has intimated that he will be filing charges against the police for holding him for more than 24 hours since his arrest at airport.

Inspector General of Police David Kimaiyo had directed that the leaders be arrested for questioning over the attacks.

On Saturday, bandits attacked a vehicle in which a 24 year-old Tullow company employee, a teacher and three GSU officers were travelling in and Tuesday, the five were found dead.

The attack caused uproar and panic among the residents with President Uhuru Kenyatta warning those found culpable that they would face the full wrath of the law.

President Kenyatta said: “Attacks on the State and the security forces of the Republic of Kenya are a threat to our stability and undermine the epitome of authority in all civilized society, the world over.”

“We will not accept any pretext, including the excuse of cattle rustling to harm our forces, our people or destroy property anywhere in this country.” President Kenyatta added.

The attack occurred days after a police officer and a teacher were injured when raiders set ablaze a police vehicle that was ferrying KCSE examination papers to Kapedo Mixed Secondary School.
